Headshot Tips

These tips are suggested for corporate-style head shots.  Creative head shots are a different story and individual styling is more flexible.  I will have some more resources on creative head shots later.

  • If you usually wear glasses, you may choose to wear them in your head shot.
  • Keep jewelry simple. Stud or hoop earrings are great. You want your image to be mostly about your face so jewelry can distract.
  • It is suggested to wear mid-tones in solid, neutral colors, no solid black or white. Wearing  colors that accentuate your eye or hair color is flattering. Busy patterns will distract from your face.
  • If you have fair skin, do not wear pastel or cream colors, they will make your skin tone look washed out and pale. If you have dark skin, don’t wear colors that are too dark. Lighter colors will bring out the lighter tones in your skin making more contrast in your final photo.
  • Women are suggested to wear your hair down.
  • Wear well-tailored clothing that fits well and doesn’t bunch or stretch. The biggest clothing mistake is wearing clothes that are too large in an attempt to hide body parts. It actually creates the opposite effect. It is our job to pose you in the most flattering way for your body type. So wear clothes that fit.
  • Men – wear and undershirt and wait to put on starched shirts until you get to studio to avoid wrinkling.
  • Clothing with tight grids or a small herringbone pattern can have a moire pattern effect on camera, so stay away from grid-like patterns and thin stripes.(see example of men’s suit below with moire pattern effect.
