What to Wear on Your Photo Shoot

I wanted to compile a quick guide to getting ready for your photo shoot.  Most of my clients want to know what is the best thing to wear.  Well, I not only have some tips but, some very good visual examples of families that I have shot that excelled in this area.  Consider this my best dressed list! 🙂  I’m very hands on with the entire styling of your photo shoot.  I have been known to take a few iphone shots from clients who just want to pre-approve their outfits for their session.  I consider this part of my job to help consult with you about such details.  So I wanted to make a quick “What to Wear” blog post to refer all my happy clients.

1.  Wear clothes that fit.  I myself have been majorly guilty of wearing clothes that are too big in effort to hide body parts.  But, it actually creates the opposite result. So make sure to wear clothing that is tailored and fits you well.  I will help pose you in the most flattering position for you.

2.  Stay away from busy patterns and logos.  Solids in my opinion are the best route.  But stripes are o.k. as long they are not too thin and busy.  Stripes tend to cause a moire effect on digital photography so if you wear them, stick with bolder, thicker stripes.

3.  It is not necessary to be matchy.  The best outfits are those that are coordinated.  You will notice in my examples how some clients have chosen 2 or 3 colors to play off each other.  You can also use accessories to tie in colors from another person.

4. Wear similar styles.  Casual, dressy, semi-casual.  Just make sure you all are in the same vicinity there.

5. It is o.k to highlight one person.  For instance baby wears pink and mom and dad wear white.  Mom wears black and daughters wear diff. colors.

6.  Staying with the same color family WORKS!!  It is o.k to mix dark purple with light purple.   Remember it is not necessary and not preferred to be matchy matchy.

7.  Wear something that makes you feel FABULOUS!!  It will show in your shoot if you are uncomfortable, so make this your top priority.

8. Chose a color scheme that will work well in your home.  For example, if your house is decorated in warm browns and reds, then it is probably not wise to choose pinks and pastels for your clothing.  Remember that you are definitely going to want to display your beautiful artwork.  So making wise color choices ahead of time pays off big in the long run!  If you are doing an engagement shoot, consider wearing colors that will compliment the colors of your wedding.  You know will want to display some of them at your wedding-so think ahead!
